Aan de bestaande huisstijllettertypes heb ik een serie tekens/illustraties toegevoegd. Deze serie tekens verduidelijken, zowel in brochures en correspondentie als in het lesmateriaal, wat de scholieren gaan doen (schilderen, acteren, puzzelen etc.).

In de brochure versterken de tekens de titels van de programmaonderdelen; zo wordt een titel met tekens een herkenbaar geheel. Bij de boeking van een programmaonderdeel komt deze herkenbare titel terug. Tenslotte worden de tekens in het lesmateriaal ingezet om aan te geven wat de opdracht is, bijvoorbeeld: een kijkopdracht, een tekenopdracht etc.

Design for brochures, correspondence and education material for the education programme of the Frans Hals Museum.

I designed a series of icons to complement the existing house style fonts. These icons symbolise a number of activities in the museum that can be booked by visiting school groups. In the brochure that is sent to schools, the icons enhance the recognizability of the titles for each activity. The same icons are then used in the correspondence relating to the booking, and also in the education material to indicate the nature of the activity (painting, acting, puzzles, observation).

Hotel Eldorado maakt voorstellingen, sociaal-culturele theaterprojecten en salons rondom het thema identiteit in een multi-etnische wereld. Hotel Eldorado is een verlangen naar een betere plek. Een tijdelijke samenkomst. Een documentaire manier van theater maken.

De beelden voor de affiches zijn gemaakt door de deelnemers van de workshop ‘We are here’ uit Bratunac in Oost-Bosnië. De affiches werden opgehangen in Bratunac, op straat. Ze zijn bedoeld als een kleine prikkeling die uitnodigt naar de jeugd van dit stadje te kijken. En hoe de jeugd haar stad beleeft.

Hotel Eldorado does performances, socio-cultural theatre projects and vignettes about identity in a multi-ethnic world.

Hotel Eldorado is a longing for a better place. A temporary gathering. A documentary way of making theatre.

The images for the posters were made by the participants of the workshop ‘We are here’ from Bratunac in East Bosnia. The posters were hung in the streets of Bratunac. They are meant to focus attention on the young people of the town, and how they experience the town.

De studenten van Techniek en theater zijn als verschikte nachtdieren gefotografeerd. De acteurs poseerden in hetzelfde decor. De studenten van de School voor Nieuwe Dansontwikkeling trekken in 12 frames hun jas uit.

Graduation project-book for the school of drama, technical theatre arts, production and dance. The last and most substantial edition of this special project: 115 students of 11 studies at the Theatre School.

I came up with the title for this book: in your hands. The title has two meanings: The reader of the book literary holds the projects of 115 final year students in their hands. And for the students: the degree is behind them and the future is in their hands. The book has a small size, so it can be held in your hands.

Together with the photographer I devised a specific portrait for each study. The styles of the portraits are clearly distinguishable, such that the portraits of each student can be linked directly to their degree, even though the students are ordered alphabetically by their last names.

For example, the students of the degree for technical theatre arts were photographed as disturbed night owls; The actors-in-training all posed in the same stage set; The students of the degree for New Dance Development took off their coats in 12 frames.

For the texts that accompany the portraits, I selected quotes from the students containing snippets of acquired wisdom, with reference to the title (the future is) “In your hands.”

Research report on how visitors and inhabitants experience the Waddenzee.
Jos Bazelmans journeyed from east to west through the area comprising the Waddenzee and selected 30 interviews with inhabitants of and visitors to the area.

Oorspronkelijk zou het boek alleen de geschiedenis bevatten. NAi uitgevers vond het een meerwaarde om ook een representatief deel van de collectie te tonen. De geschiedenis is chronologisch, de selectie van 150 foto’s is in 9 thema’s ondergebracht. Deze thema’s, steeds omsloten door een roze omslag en gedrukt op dubbelgestreken papier, zijn tussen de hoofdstukken geplaatst.

De 150 foto’s, het grootste deel zwart wit, waren afkomstig van 150 verschillende fotografen. Het was fantastisch om de orginele afdrukken samen met de conservator in het depot te kunnen bekijken. Vervolgens was het spannend om in het boek de originele afdrukken in hun kleurnuance zo dicht mogelijk te benaderen.

A publication on the history of the photograpy collection of the “Stedelijk Museum”.

Initially the book was to contain only the history of the photography collection. However, NAi Publishers felt it worthwhile to also show a representative selection from the collection. The history is chronological; the selection of 150 images is divided into 9 themes. These themes, enclosed between pink coversheets and printed on glossy paper, alternate with the historical chapters.

The 150 images, mostly black and white, were taken by 150 different photographers. It was wonderful to join the curator and see the original prints in the depository, which enabled me to approach the subtleties of colour of the originals in the publication.

Het eerste deel bestaat uit het persoonlijke verhaal van Henk van Os over zijn kennismaking met kunst en de na-oorlogse generatie Groningse kunstenaars. Afbeeldingen van kunstwerken zijn in de tekstkolom geplaatst, de foto’s zoveel mogelijk daaromheen als sfeerbeelden.
In het tweede deel wordt van elke kunstenaar werk getoond. De portretfoto’s van de kunstenaars staan niet bij de biografie, maar zijn bij elkaar geplaatst als groep/generatie. Voor het omslag gebruikte ik een affiche uit 1965.

A publication written by Henk van Os for the eponymous exhibition in the Groninger Museum.

The first part relates Henk van Os’ personal experience when he encountered art and the post-war generation of young Groningen artists. Images of art works are placed in the text, surrounded by photographs to set the scene.  In the second part, works of each artist are depicted. The portrait photographs are not with each biography, but are collated as a group/generation of artists. For the cover I used a poster from 1965.

Ik wilde de studenten tonen als generatie, een tijdschrift met frontale ingeflitste fotografie. We fotografeerden ze zoveel mogelijk in groepjes. Groepjes die dat jaar samenwerkten. Deze samenwerkingen overschreden meestal de opleidingen.
Binnen het boek kreeg elke opleiding zijn eigen sfeer en vorm. We keken tijdens het maken van de portretten wat er ontstond. De acteurs waren als een jong hecht gezelschap, kwebbelend over wat was en wat nog komen ging. De mime-ers schreven ieder afzonder-lijk een manifest voor de toekomst en schaarden zich aan een tafel als young angry men.
Naast de (groeps)portretten vroeg ik de studenten beeldmateriaal in te leveren van voorstellingen en producties.

Graduation project-book for the school of acting, directing, mime and drama teaching, and technical theatre arts.

I wanted to show the students as a generation, a magazine with frontal flash photograpy. We mostly photographed them in small groups that were working together that year. Those group collaborations usually transdescended the different studies. In the book each study had its own atmosphere and form. The actors-in-training were a young and close-knit company, chatting about the present and future. The mime people each wrote a manifesto for the future and gathered as a group of young angry men around the table.

In addition to the group portraits I asked the students to hand in material of performances and productions.
